Some 21-year-old pop stars, adulated by millions since their mid-teens, cocooned by entourages whenever they leave a hotel room, and protected by publicists at every enquiry, do not make the most scintillating company. Many go off the rails, others can barely utter a sentence (they have someone else to do it for them), and few grow into affable young men with admirable manners and a good line in conversation.

Somehow Mr Jonas has broken the mould. After huge success as a member of the Grammy-nominated, purity-ring wearing Jonas Brothers (the third album with his two siblings topped the Billboard chart in 2008), a successful Disney Channel movie or two, a reality TV series, more than 2,250,000 Twitter followers and 942,936 Facebook fans and counting, this American singer seems very grounded indeed. And we should know: in the past three months MR PORTER has had the pleasure of Mr Jonas’ company three times in three different cities.

We first made his acquaintance at our dinner held at the Chateau Marmont in LA in honour of the designer Mr Simon Spurr. Mr Jonas is a big fan of fashion (more of which later) and turned out to be delightful company: one of those rare beasts who, despite being in the spotlight and the subject of a thousand press junket questions, manages to engage his dinner companions by asking, as well as answering, questions – a rare attribute in certain demographics today.

A few weeks later, the MR PORTER team drew up outside the Principe hotel in Milan where we were staying for the biannual menswear shows to find the entrance surrounded by gaggles of teenage girls peering eagerly into the tinted windows of each car that pulled up. They appeared very disappointed when they saw it was only us; we were equally disappointed to discover that we were not the reason they’d been camping outside on the pavement for the previous two days.

Away from the mayhem, tucked inside the hotel’s resplendent lobby, Mr Jonas was taking tea with his team; he chatted happily to well-wishers who stopped by to say hello; and later that evening was equally comfortable enjoying the hotel’s lively bar scene. The only clue there was a pop star in the house was the sizeable bouncers and the fact that one of the hotel’s lifts had been cordoned off for sole use by the Jonas entourage.

The singer was in Milan to attend the Calvin Klein fashion show while on a promotional tour of Europe prior to releasing his first solo album. Leaving the comfort and adulation teen band membership must give you, and launching yourself as a ”grown-up” artist, must be a daunting task. You justknow you’re going to be judged: judged by the teen fans who never want you to stop being a prepubescent Jonas brother; judged by the big boy pop world who’ll be very suspicious that you’ve decided to try to join their club; and judged by your peers who’ve tried and failed to successfully make the transition from cute to cool.

”It’s bizarre to think it’s all on me this time,” he says, when we meet again in a photographic studio in north London for this shoot. ”But the feedback from fans so far has been great. But it also helps that I have my brothers’ support. They understood that I wanted to do something on my own, and told me to take my time.” Have they heard his album yet? ”Yes, I got a lift in my brother’s car and he had it playing. I didn’t even know he had a copy – he must have got it from the record company. Luckily, they really like it.”

Mr Jonas says his solo debut, due out in September, is an upbeat album with a dance/electro sound. ”It’s fun; something you’d listen to when hanging out with your friends,” he says. The lyrics, however, are very honest and raw. The first single, ‘See No More’, which he co-wrote with Mr Chris Brown, is a mid-tempo ballad about the breakdown of a relationship (he split up with the Twilight actress, Ms Ashley Greene, earlier this year). ”It was an emotional, upsetting song to write, but I truly find music the easiest way through which to express my feelings. Releasing a song is a bit like handing your journal over for people to read.”

For the moment, his legions of female fans will be delighted to hear he says he’s enjoying being single, although there are rumours he’s dating the Marc Jacobs model Ms Karlie Kloss. ”It’s nice to focus on one thing sometimes, and for now that’s my music. It’s tough when you’re far away from someone for long periods of time and so when you’re single you don’t need to feel bad about that. ”But,” he adds, ”you’re always looking for the right person.” And who would that perfect person be? ”Hmm, that’s hard to say. I change my mind all the time; and if you do name someone it’s then awkward when you bump into them.” When asked to name who he thinks is, or was, the most beautiful woman in the world, he finds it easier. ”Elizabeth Taylor. In her heyday, she was amazing,” he smiles.

Now that the awkward questions are over, he gets ready to model for the fashion pictures above, something he clearly enjoys. ”I love fashion,” he explains. ”Over the past year I’ve got heavily into it. Whether I’m going out for the night, or during the day, I love putting on something that pops and makes you feel comfortable.” Brands he favours include Simon Spurr, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Calvin Klein. ”I’m a big shoe guy, too. I have far too many pairs. Whenever there’s a new style out, I’ll text my stylist: ‘Can we get a pair of those?’”

For all the plush hotel suites, limos, assistants and fashion front rows these young prodigies have access to, it’s a strange life they lead. Although Mr Jonas gets to travel the world in style, he’s been on the road for months with only two days off at home in LA, has a diary that’s fully booked with commitments until next spring, and has fans and record company executives closely watching his every move – eager to see if he can do a Timberlake and hop over the Disney fence to mainstream credibility. But, happily, he seems to enjoy the pressure. And if he does find it stressful, he has the good grace to hide it well. Mind you, I suppose there aren’t many jobs where you leave work with a new Givenchy jacket and a pair of Margiela trainers. Mr Jonas liked them so much, and asked so politely, we couldn’t say no. After all, most pop stars would have just nicked them and not said a word.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Joe Jonas is ready to make his own mark on the music industry as he prepares to release his first solo album this September. He promises a more mature album with a new sound that fans haven’t heard before.
His first single, “See No More,” shows a more vulnerable side of Joe as he sings about the heartbreak of an ended relationship. This is one of Joe’s more emotional songs, but fans can also look forward to a mix of more upbeat, fun party songs on his album.

Joe Jonas treated five lucky KDWB radio contest winners and their guests to a dinner at CRAVE Restaurant in Minneapolis on Thursday. Charming, charismatic and easy going, Joe spent time with each winner, signing autographs and taking pictures. I caught up with Joe to get the details on his new album.

Nicole Crosbie: Tell me a little about your upcoming album. What can fans expect to hear?

Joe Jonas:  The upcoming album has a lot of influences from urban artists and dance artists. I love music from Kanye West and Kid Cudi to Latin music and I wanted to pull all of my inspirations together to create something new for the fans who have been around for a while to hear. It’s something for new ears. Maybe people who haven’t listened to the Jonas Brothers’ stuff before can go, “You know, I want to listen to this.” That would be great.

NC: What was it like to record without your brothers?

JJ: It was cool. I feel like this whole process was something that I wanted to do alone and that they were supportive of and they wanted me to have the experience to go write on my own. I didn’t really write a lot of songs for my project with them and they felt like they wanted me to take my time and go on my own journey and that’s what I felt like I needed to do.

NC: Your past relationships have received a lot of media attention. Can we expect to hear anything about your previous relationships in your new songs?

JJ: I feel like they are all from personal experiences, so I’m sure that there are going to be rumors or ideas of who I’m writing the songs about. I can say that things I’ve gone through in personal relationships are definitely in the songs. My stories that I’ve gone through, the good and bad of relationships that I’ve gone through… I’ve written down the lyrics and been able to hopefully let people in. That way they can relate.

NC: There’s been a lot of buzz that this solo album shows the new, grown up side of Joe Jonas. How do you react to that?

JJ: It’s a bit more of a mature record, a coming-of-age record. It’s something that might shock a few people here and there with the lyrics and things that I’m going through. I think it’s just more mature; it’s age-appropriate.

NC: “See No More” [the first song released from Joe’s solo album] has received really positive feedback from your fans. What has the immediate support from your fans meant to you?

JJ: It’s been so amazing to see so much support. We live in the Twitter world now, so you can really see quickly what people are saying back to me- whether it’s good or bad- and luckily it’s been all good with “See No More.” They’re loving the new music. I feel like for them, they’ve been hungry for anything Jonas for a while because we haven’t released a CD in over a year and a half, so for them to hear new stuff, they’re like, “Yes! Thank you, finally!” -which is always a nice thing.

Joe Jonas, Justin Bieber

It’s time to let that infamous Justin Bieber/Jonas Brothers rivalry go, because
according to Joe Jonas, it never existed.

“That’s funny,” the middle Jonas brother tells AOL of the supposed beef.
“I’ve been through it a couple of times; the same thing happened to us with
Hanson. We had a conversation with Hanson and said we had nothing against them,
and [they told us] the same thing happened with them and *NSYNC [with a fake
rivalry].

“And same thing for Bieber,” he adds. “He’s doing him, and that’s all that
really matters. As long as you’re independent artists, then you’re fine.”

“I don’t even think there’s much comparison with Bieber,” he adds, “because
there’s totally a big age difference — there’s a similar fanbase, but a lot of
his fans are a little bit younger.”

Jonas believes his solo debut, ‘Fast Life,’ should put an end to the chatter
once and for all. “[My] songs are a bit more mature,” he says. “The things that
I speak about … I really hope 11-year-olds aren’t relating to them, or their
parents are going to have to talk. I’m 21, so [I sing about] things a
21-year-old would deal with. And if an 11-year-old or whatever wants to listen
to my music, that’s great, I’m more than happy. I just feel the core audience is
going to be a little older.”

Clearly eager to embrace his maturity, Jonas goes so far as to describe
himself as the “old man on campus” when it comes to the pop world. He also can’t
help but weigh in on the next generation of pop stars waiting in the wings.

“Everybody has to go through their own experiences, good and bad, to become
the artists they want to become, or the person they want to become. Sometimes I
definitely look at artists — not naming names — but I just go, ‘Oh man, I can
see where this is going!’

“It’s kind of cool to see that I’m in a more mature area of my life. It feels
like as I grow up so does my music and so do my fans, and it’s a good feeling.”

Joe Jonas’ Wildest Suits!

“Every girl’s crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man,” and Celebuzz could not agree more with that statement.

Joe Jonas is one of the best dressed fellas in Hollywood and it should come as no secret that he’s not afraid to take a fashion risk. Case in point?

The studly 21-year-old was seen wearing this bold blue striped suit in Europe recently, and it made us nostalgic for all the other awesome looks he’s rocked over the years.

From crazy patterns to fun accessories, this gallery proves that Joe is one sharp star.

Solo Star
JOE JONAS HAS GROWN UP — AND SO HAS HIS MUSIC

Earlier this year, Joe Jonas almost fell into a life of crime.

On a sunny May afternoon in Los Angeles, the middle Jonas Brother and I are wandering through “Art in the Streets,” Jeffrey Deitch’s massive street-art extravaganza at the Museum of Contemporary Art. He’s telling me about his fascination with the work of Banksy and Mr. Brainwash when we come upon a small piece, nearly hidden over a doorway, by Invader, the French artist known for his tile mosaics depicting characters from the old-school video game, Space Invader.

“Oh, his stuff is great,” Jonas says, snapping a picture with his iPhone. Then this Disney Channel superstar tells me about the night a few months ago that he and his friends came this close to stealing an Invader piece from its perch on the side of a Melrose Avenue apartment building. “We didn’t take it, though,” Jonas adds, “since we figured if we got caught the cops might think we were the ones who put it up.”

A brush with vandalism isn’t the only sign that Jonas, 21, is growing out of his kiddie-pop past: In September the singer will release his highly anticipated solo debut, Fastlife, on which he leaves behind the Jonas Brothers’ freshly scrubbed boy-band sound in favor of a darker, club-ready dance vibe. “I came to shut this thing down,” Jonas brags in a hard-thumping tune called “Love Slayer,” and what’s crazy is that you almost believe him.

“I was surprised he reached out to me,” says Nate “Danja” Hills, the frequent Britney Spears collaborator and producer on the album. “There’s such a gap between what I do and what the Jonas Brothers are. But that’s the excitement — it left us an opportunity to create something new.” Danja isn’t afraid of scaring off JoBros fans with this more adult approach. “They’ve all grown up with Joe, so they’ll be able to understand where he’s coming from,” he says. “And, really, he’s a star no matter what he does. If I give him something people can move to on top of his natural charisma, that’s like dynamite and gasoline.”

Steering a black Audi convertible down Sunset Boulevard on our way to the museum, Jonas says he didn’t hit upon Fastlife’s style right off the bat. He started out working in a Michael Bublé vein, which satisfied the singer in Jonas but not the songwriter. “I don’t mean to name-drop,” he says, “but about a year-and-a-half ago I met Bono, and he told me to write music that was really honest, to not be afraid to go there.” So advised, Jonas gave into his longtime love of electro-beats, as well as his desire to reveal more of himself in his lyrics. “I used to be afraid of letting go of the fragile part of me,” he sings in “See No More.” That’s no longer the case.

“I think it’s good that he tried out a few things to see what felt best,” says Jonas’ younger brother Nick, who last year went solo himself with the soul-bluesy Who I Am. (Older brother Kevin recently got married, but give him time.) “As Joe has grown as a man, it’s been really interesting to see how that’s influenced his sound. And now he’s landed in a real sweet spot. When we all heard the music, right away it was like, ‘This is where you need to be.’”

As we pass the Palladium, where Jonas points out with enthusiasm that the reformed Cars are playing tonight, I ask him about Justin Timberlake, whose 2002 solo debut, Justified, makes for an easy (and apt) comparison point for Fastlife. “He’s absolutely an inspiration,” Jonas says of the former ‘N Sync star. “I look up to Justin so much. He pretty much created his own lane.”

A space for himself is exactly what Jonas is after these days, in the professional sense as well as the personal: After sharing homes with his family and with friends, he’s currently living alone for the first time, in a Hollywood high-rise near the Jonas organization’s corporate headquarters. (In addition to music, these guys are involved in TV, movies, merchandise, you name it.) At MOCA, when we see an installation piece littered with empty Tecate cans, Jonas laughs knowingly, admitting how relieved he is to finally not have roommates.

Still, he’s quick to clarify that the emphasis on Fastlife hasn’t resulted in a loosening of family ties. Indeed, the Jonases recently vacationed together in Hawaii, where Nick and Joe somehow ended up having lunch with Mick Fleetwood. “My brothers and I, we’re like each other’s best friends,” Joe says, “and I think it’s that foundation that makes me feel like I can really do this on my own for a second.”

WHAT’S ON HIS SUMMER PLAYLIST
“Pass Out,” Tinie Tempah
“She Ain’t You,” Chris Brown
“Rolling in the Deep,” Adele

Nick Jonas Dishes on the Quaker Chewy Superstar Search and the Future of the Jonas Brothers

Nick Jonas has teamed up with Quaker to find the next big superstar. The winner of the Quaker Chewy Superstar Search gets to record a song produced by Nick, a contract with Jonas Group Management, appear in a music video, and walk away with a $5,000 cash prize! Nick talked with TeenMag about the contest, his popstar faves, and the future of the Jonas Brothers.

TeenMag: Are there any artists out there right now that girls who are entering Chewy Superstar Search should pay attention to? Who out there has what you’re looking for

Nick: Specific to the age group I’m looking for, I think about what Willow Smith has done. The things that she’s provided for herself as an artist, from the song to the look, everything. It’s all so consistent, and it’s awesome.

TeenMag: Why did you decide to get involved with this search and mentor a new talent?

Nick: This is so important to me because I feel like I’ve learned a lot from my journey so far. Both from what I’ve done with my brothers and what I’ve done on my own. The opportunity to produce a song with this artist and hopefully share what I’ve learned with them, and really work as a mentor, would be a blessing.

TeenMag: What advice would you give to artists just starting out?

Nick: Yeah, I think one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was ”Look like you’re at the bottom, even if you’re at the top,” which basically just means stay humble and keep the right attitude. That really spoke to us when we were starting out, and still has for many years since.

TeenMag: Did you give your brother Joe any advice on his new solo album?

Nick: The thing that I told him was just be yourself. He really has. His record is all stuff he’s gone through and songs he really connects with. I feel like he made a great record that he can be really proud of. It’s because he really stayed true to who he is as an artist. From his live show to his video, every piece is consistent with that overall philosophy.

TeenMag: Will we hear more Jonas Brothers music soon?

Nick: As far as the next step, we’re all going on our own journeys as individuals, doing individual projects and doing different things there. At some point, we’ll definitely come back and do the group thing again. But it’s just a matter of time.

Interview: Denise Jonas
The mother of music sensations the Jonas Brothers talks about raising celebrity sons

At the June 8 kickoff event in Times Square for the Quaker Chewy Superstar Search, Nick Jonas set young hearts aflutter with his stomach-flipping smile and sultry croon. But we were interested in the one who started it all—his mother. Time Out Kids chatted with Denise Jonas, mother of the Jonas Brothers members (Kevin, 23, Joe, 21, and Nick, 18) and their younger sibling, Frankie, 10, about raising celebrity sons, balancing work and family, and her teenage crush on Harrison Ford.

Nick seemed really confident and charismatic onstage. What’s it like watching your son work a room like that?
It’s fun. He’s in a funny mood today. Nick’s quite a serious person. I’m really proud of him. I actually cried at one point, just listening to him and singing along. It never gets old.

When did it first click for you that your sons were becoming international superstars?
Oh gosh, I don’t think there was a specific moment. We just watched it grow. We worked so hard, the entire family worked so hard together. I think hearing their songs on the radio, and just going places…I think probably the craziest time was in Peru. There were so many people outside the hotel, singing all night. And in Peru, at Lima, the fog rolls in at night and you can’t see anything. I couldn’t believe they stayed out there for 24 hours. And they sang the whole time.

Your schedule must be insanely hectic. How do you work in family time?
Because my sons are working together and they’re family, we’ve had to learn how to balance work and family and not let the two interfere in a negative way. My husband and I really dedicate ourselves to being with them when they travel and being together as a family. That’s why we got married and had kids in the first place, because we wanted to be together. We always just try to have time together, daily. When we’re home, we eat together—we always eat as a family. It’s harder now because they’re older, but when opportunities like this provide us with time together, it’s great.

You have a home in Dallas now. Would you ever consider moving to New York City?
I would love to live in New York City, someday. My oldest, Kevin, actually lives in New Jersey right now with his wife, and we’re from New Jersey, so we’re used to living close to the city. New York is a great place.

What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re in the city?
Well…I love to eat when I’m here [Laughs]. The feel of the city, the life, the vibe—it’s all so exciting here.

Compared to other young celebrities, your sons seem to have maintained a level of sanity despite their fame. As a parent, how do you work to keep your sons grounded?
I think you really just have to work at it. You have to make a constant effort every day to be aware of who you are. My husband said to Nick, “Just know that there’s always somebody out there who’s working harder than you.” You have to be aware that you can always be replaced and you need to work hard. I think the fans have been such a blessing: The boys have learned how to really embrace other people and love them. As a family, we’ve always had guests in our home and had different people live with us, so I think they understand how to open up and embrace other people. I think that really helped them to allow people into their lives and to think about others before themselves.

Any thoughts on the hoards of tween girls fawning over your sons?
Well, I love that there are other people that love them like I do. I remember being a teen girl and being in love with Harrison Ford, and I think it’s great that [these girls] have that same passion. It’s really neat to see. I never get mad about that; I just can’t.

One last question: what’s your favorite Jonas Brothers song?
My favorite song of Nick’s is “Olive and an Arrow” off of his Administration album [Who I Am]. And my favorite of the boys’ is “Pushing Me Away.”

Friends with Benefits

Remember Venn diagrams?  Those two circles in varying degrees of overlap to represent shared (numerical) values? More than ever before, those intersections matter in marketing, too.

Here’s an example: 26-year-old Swedish art directors in one circle, American pop sensations the Jonas Brothers in the other. Zero overlap. The circles practically repel. Try to impress or engage the Swede on the subject of Nick Jonas and he will either look at you blankly or laugh in your face.

But now check out the Venn intersection of the Jonas Brothers and girls aged 7 to 14. The overlap is whopping. Now tell those girls you’re going to spend the morning with Nick Jonas. The next thing you will hear is eardrum-piercing shrieks. And, in an instant, you will have miraculously been rendered cool.

The moral of that story?  Well, amid a digital revolution that has miraculously rendered so much advertising irrelevant, those Venn intersections now mean everything. In the digital world – a world of “friending” and “liking” and fan-paging – they represent not only where values are shared, but where relationships are found, forged and exploited. Gone is the consumer era where we dictated messages to the masses. Now we are in the relationship era, the Venn era of locating and cultivating common ground.

The session is moderated by Bob Garfield, Advertising Age columnist, co-host of NPR’s “On the Media” and author of The Chaos Scenario. Oh, and you get to spend the morning with Mashable, imc², AOL and…Nick Jonas.

Joe Jonas Steps Out

Joe Jonas, who will be front and center at Calvin Klein Collection’s men’s show in Milan on Sunday, has plenty to be excited about this summer. After the Milan shows, the pop star will embark on a six-city European tour to promote his first solo single, “See No More.” “It’s off to the races. I’ll be starting in Milan and heading to every major city,” said Jonas, 21, who modeled looks from Calvin’s spring line on Tuesday at Hollywood’s Milk Studios. Calvin Klein Collection men’s creative director Italo Zucchelli described the line as “colorful, clean American sportswear with a modern take on proportions, color and texture. It features interesting new volumes and shapes.” Meanwhile, Jonas describes his new album, “Fast Life,” out Sept. 6, as a departure from the Jonas Brothers sound. “I wanted to take my existing fans on a musical journey to show the sounds I love, from Latin to hip-hop,” he said. While Jonas said he and his brothers, Nick and Kevin, are giving their band a break for now, he adds, “You can’t break up brothers, so you can expect more music from us.”

Jag gillar vad Joe säger på slutet: “You can’t break up brothers, so you can expect more music from us.”

Star Spotting: Nick Jonas Is Seriously Really Hot. Like, This Is Getting Crazy

I just had to Google whether or not it was okay for me to say this re: age of consent, but Nick Jonas is like SUPEREFFINGHOTOMGHOWDIDTHISHAPPEN!?!? [Deep breath.] And survey says: Nick’s 18! Thanks again for this one, 1992!

The youngest (BUT STILL LEGAL, DON’T FORGET HE’S LEGAL) Jonas Brother was spotted in New York leaving the “Fox & Friends” studio looking like a modern day Superman in a “casual Fridays at the Daily Planet” sort of way. He’s also walking to wherever he’s going like he owns the place and yet, not bothering us in the least bit.

For real though guys, why does an 18-year-old Nick Jonas dress better than most of the dudes I know in their 20s? I guess it could be that whole “I travel the world to sing songs and hire people to pick out my outfits” thing, but still — 18?! He’s just a baby! A really good-looking, muscular baby that knows how to wear a button-down. Don’t quote us, but they must have switched his formula for Muscle Milk.

“Making music is my passion in life and the best way I know how to express myself,” said Nick Jonas, who started his music career at age seven before rising to stardom with The Jonas Brothers and Nick Jonas and the Administration. “I wanted to be part of the Quaker Chewy Superstar Search to help other young musicians make music and follow their dreams.”

Along with Nick Jonas, Quaker Chewy has joined forces with the non-profit organization Little Kids Rock to make music education more accessible in schools across the nation. As the only national non-profit, rock and pop-oriented music program in the U.S. public schools, Little Kids Rock focuses on ensuring every public school student has an opportunity to experience music education.

“We believe that the future of our world lies not in our children’s hands but rather in their creativity, and the Chewy Superstar Search is a great platform for children to express their musical talents,” says Little Kids Rock’s founder, David Wish. “Music inspires self-expression and confidence in children and empowers them to become creative thinkers and problem-solvers. These skills are critical to their success in school and in their daily lives.”

Introducing the Chewy Superstar Search
Beginning June 9th through August 5th, parents or legal guardians of children ages 8-14 can enter the Quaker Chewy Superstar Search by simply recording a performance of their child singing a designated portion of one of four pre-selected songs. The songs and entry form can be found on www.ChewySuperstar.com where the performance must be uploaded for submission.

Performances can also be recorded onboard the Quaker Chewy Mobile Recording Studio, a one-of-a-kind recording studio on wheels. This vehicle will hit the road this summer and visit eight cities across America to give parents and kids a unique opportunity to record a performance in-studio. Videos recorded at the Mobile Recording Studio will be emailed to each participant which they can then upload as their submission to www.ChewySuperstar.com.

A panel of judges will evaluate the performances, and select five finalists based on vocal performance, showmanship and overall performance aesthetics. Once the five finalists are selected, America will have a chance to vote for their favorite contestant. The child with the most votes will be named the Quaker Chewy Superstar.

“Quaker Chewy believes that every child should have a chance to shine,” said Bill Fiely, director of Quaker Snack Bars. “We launched the Chewy Superstar Search as a way to help give parents and kids a stage and to nourish their play. With the help of Nick Jonas and Little Kids Rock, we hope to inspire children to pursue their musical dreams.”

Visit www.ChewySuperstar.com for more details about the Chewy Superstar Search Contest and Official Rules. There is no purchase necessary to enter.
